Building On - Mackintosh

The Building On – Mackintosh symposium is part of the Scotland+Venice contribution to the international Venice Architectural Biennale. This will allow us to involve individuals from the professions, academia and the public who are visiting the Biennale, but will also us to use Venice’s cultural setting to provide a particular stimulus to the discussions. The context of Venice provides a living case study to the theme of ‘building on’ within which to explore the key questions and cultural themes raised by the plans to repair the Mackintosh Building. This discussion will help inform a framework of ideas that will be necessary to create an appropriate brief for the forthcoming restoration project.

Building On: Mackintosh – Venice

The first of two symposia focused on the Mackintosh library. This first gathering in Venice was set in the Querini Stampalia, a sixteenth century building restored in 1961 by Carlo Scarpa, brought together professionals and the public to seek to explore and identify the key questions and cultural themes which the restoration of the Mackintosh Building and in particular the Library raises.

Building On: Mackintosh – Glasgow

Having raised both questions and discussion at the Venice symposium last October, the purpose of this event is to help inform the actual restoration project by exploring best 21st century practice. It is also an opportunity to share our plans and aspirations with the people of Glasgow whose support since the fire has been incredibly important to the GSA.
